Steven Bach (1940-2009)

Steven Bach passed away on March 25, 2009 according to the MD newsletter. Mr. Bach was a scholar, producer and the author of the brilliant Marlene Dietrich: Life and Legend releases in 1992. It is simply one of the best books ever written on Dietrich. He was in contact with her and had many interesting conversations with her. He was also the rarest of creatures: a true gentleman. I wrote Mr. Bach a 'fan letter' and he was kind enough to answer.

  1. Steven Bach was an excellent writer and the most unusual biographical writer, in that he was more interested in his subjects "art" than their lovers. If you have a chance pick up his other works on "Leni Riefenstahl", "Moss Hart" and "The Making of Heaven's Gate". All are meticulously researched and are written in his usual humorous an informative style.

  2. Umaneo, that is a wonderful letter! To the commenter, I still have to read all those books, and have had Bach's Riefenstahl bio on my mind because I recently rewatched the documentary, The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl to refresh my memory of her comments on Dietrich's lighting needs and ended up viewing even more because her technical expertise was captivating.
